What's counselling all about?
'Counselling and psychotherapy are umbrella terms that cover a range of talking therapies. They are delivered by trained practitioners who work with people over a short or long term to help them bring about effective change or enhance their wellbeing.' (BACP definition)
Therapy is about giving yourself time for 'you' (me time) and is a specific time and place where you can express difficult thoughts, feelings and emotions, gain greater awareness of feelings, come to terms with difficult times in your life and move forward in a more positive way. This may be by finding new ways of coping, ways of resolving a situation or perhaps changing something. It's often difficult to talk with family members or friends about sensitive issues; talking therapy is unjudgemental, accepting, confidential and safe.
What happens on the first appointment?
We arrange a convenient time for a phone call assessment, around 30-50 minutes, which is about finding out what your needs are and is also a good time to ask any questions you might have about the service. Most people find the first appointment a bit scary so it's reassuring to talk, become a little more familiar and think about your expectations.
If you think talking therapy is for you and we can work together to help you find your answers, an appointment will be arranged for 1-2 weeks time.
Hope this explains things a little. Look forward to meeting you.
